of Steve Fortier, CommuniTeam founder and president
Steve Fortier has a diverse background of practice, applied research, writing, training and consulting in the areas of community building, organization development, community youth development and community health promotion. Regardless of the context, Steve's work involves weaving together diverse talents, experiences and voices to form powerful teams capable of leading positive change.
In all, Steve has shared his insights and "tools" with community leaders in thirty-four states and twenty-nine countries and he has consulted with dozens of corporations, non-profit organizations and community coalitions.
Steve is the editor and co-author (with eight youths aged 11-18) of Youth Leadership in Action, a how-to guide for young people looking to build community. He is also a contributor to Please Talk With Me, the guide to teen-adult dialogue nights, a community process which he co-created. Each of these books is being used in over 5,000 communities around the world to build community and engage young people as community resources. Steve has also authored many articles on community building, community leadership and community health promotion. His writing has appeared in New England Non Profit Quarterly magazine, Zip Lines magazine, the book The Children of 2010, and websites including Western Justice Center, YMCA of the USA, Center for Living Democracy, Youthwork, Community Tool Box, and Family Success Online Resource Center.
Steve has been a featured speaker at several national and international conferences, including the first annual Hands-On Student Involvement Conference (held in Prague, Czech Republic in 2002) and is on the National Advisory Board of the University of Kansas School of Community Health Promotion's "Community Tool Box," an online technical assistance resource being used by political, health, and community leaders from around the world. Steve holds a masters degree in Organization and Management from Antioch New England Graduate School and has undergraduate degrees in Fitness and Health Management and Chemical Dependency Studies from Keene State College (NH). He lives with wife Sue and children Sean and Laryssa in Alstead, NH, where he has served as co-chair of the school system's site-based management team.
To spend more time at home with his family, as well as to "practice what he preaches," Steve currently serves as Executive Director of the Meeting Waters YMCA which serves over twenty New Hampshire and Vermont communities of the Connecticut River Valley. Through CommuniTeam he still works with community coalitions and organizations primarily in the Northeast of the United States (although on occasion he can be convinced to visit other parts of the world!).
